The Most Surprising Plant-Based Source of Omega-3

James Colquhoun JAMES COLQUHOUN

Omega-3’s are an important part of our diet. No matter what diet protocol you follow, the foods you like or dislike, the evidence points to this one fact alone. And most of us aren’t getting enough of these essential fats on our plates. Typically we’ve been told to eat small, oily fish and take our supplements, which may have it’s place, but I’ve recently discovered the most surprising (and potent) plant-based source of omega-3.

I was recently speaking with the insightful Ocean Robbins from Food Revolution, (he’s currently working on the upcoming Food Revolution Summit - and if you haven’t saved your free seat yet you can do it here). Ocean and his father John are living evidence of the power of a plant-based diet, especially when it comes to anti-inflammatory foods.

Did you know that omega-3’s are some of the most powerful anti-inflammatory foods?

This is because microscopically, these fatty acids can reduce the production of molecules and substances linked to inflammation, such as inflammatory eicosanoids and cytokines. Addressing chronic inflammation throughout the body has been shown to reduce the occurrence of chronic disease, but the nutritional importance of omega-3’s doesn’t just stop there.

High-quality omega-3’s are important for many functions in the body and support holistic health. Studies have shown an adequate intake can:

  • Fight depression and anxiety.

  • Improve eye health.

  • Promote brain health in utero and early life.

  • Improve risk factors for heart disease.

  • Can reduce symptoms of ADHD in children.

  • Reduce symptoms of metabolic syndrome.

  • Fight some autoimmune diseases.

  • Can fight age-related mental decline and Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Can reduce asthma in children.

  • Can reduce fat in your liver.

  • May improve bone and joint health.

  • Shown to improve sleep.

  • Beneficial for healthy skin.

So what was the most surprising source of omega-3’s that Ocean Robbins shared with me?

They often say ‘you are what you eat’, so some revolutionary nutrition scientists looked to what the omega-3 rich fish were eating, and it all came back to one thing. The algae in the water. Following this discovery, research and studies have been conducted and they all come back to the same thing - this naturally occurring, renewable, plant-based source is one of the best ways to get additional omega-3’s in your diet. Of course, it doesn’t taste the best straight from the ocean, so many turn to algae-formulated supplements, like superfoods greens powders.
