Tips For Naturally Healthy Skin

Elena Shephard ELENA SHEPHARD

If your skin is not at its healthiest, you can naturally improve its appearance using simple steps like exercise, diet and regular skin care routine. According to Paula Bourelly, a professor of dermatology at Georgetown University in Washington D.C., some people are born with a good skin due to the role of genetics, but you can enhance the look of your skin through good habits practiced on a daily basis. Most skincare experts believe the secret to gorgeous skin lies behind a mix of science, overall good lifestyle habits, common sense, and simple skincare regimen that is easy to stick with. Here are some of the ways you can get your skin at its healthiest:

1) Quit Smoking

Smoking negatively affects your skin directly and indirectly. In reference to a study conducted by Bahaman Guyuron, a plastic surgeon and MD of Case Western Reserve University, people who smoked and stayed outdoors without a sunscreen looked older than their age mates who shunned the habit as well as tanning. Their skins also had many and deeper wrinkles and more fine lines. According to Guyuron, smoking contributes to premature aging and has other adverse effects on the body that can affect the skin. Bourelly says that if you are a smoker, the best thing you can do for your skin and body is to stop smoking.

2) Stick with a Simple Skincare Routine

Some people tend to think that the more of a product they use, the better and faster will be the results. However, dermatologist Jeanie Leddon, MD, PhD, based in Boulder, Colombia, says that misuse of skincare products is the biggest mistake made by most people in skin treatments. Combining several ingredients can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Friedman concurs that all a beautiful skin requires is a gentle cleanser, natural sunscreen, and moisturizer. A simple skincare routine is easier to stick with. It is also advisable to exfoliate regularly to eliminate dead skill cells on your skin. You can exfoliate using homemade body scrubs.

3) Be Patient

Switching treatment products regularly might not agree with your skin. According to Leddon, most beauty products require time before you can start noticing their effects. Finish your entire bottle to see if it's producing the desired results. With seasonal changes, you will need to change your cosmetic products. For instance, you can switch to an oil-free moisturizer in hotter seasons and use a heavier one in winter. However, if a new product brings undesired experiences, such as irritation or burning sensation, discontinue using at once.

4) Treat before Bedtime

Most people are on a very busy schedule during the day and may be tired in the evening to spend some time on their skin. Cleansing your skin before retiring to bed removes makeup, dirt and other impurities that accumulate during the day. If you go to sleep with make up and other products on your skin, it can clog your pores which can make things even worse. After cleansing at night, always remember to apply a moisturizer to keep your skin nourished.

5) Your Skin Is A Reflection Of Your Lifestyle

There are several ways to improve your lifestyle for the sake of your health and skin.
These may include:

•Avoiding excessive use of alcohol or drink responsibly
•Getting adequate sleep every night (7-8 hours)
•Engaging in regular exercises for at least 150 minutes every week
•Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated from within
•Making dietary changes to incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables in your meals
•Learning stress management techniques, such as meditation and yoga
•Avoiding excessive sun exposure from 9a.m. to 5p.m.

6) Brighten Your Skin With At Home Face Masks
